Why Companies Give Away Free Sample Products?

By: Joe Sanders

Perhaps you know a person between your friends or in your neighborhood who has received a free product sample from a leading company. What do you think about such free giveaways? Are they only want to market their products? Or they just want to keep their brands alive? Having their free offers in your email box on a daily basis annoy you or make you happy? Here I have tried to discuss about this matter.

All well-known companies have various ways to market their products. One of these ways which is especially favorable is giving away free samples and free stuff to some of their consumers. Usually, these companies select a group of their elite consumers as "test makers" and each time a new product comes out, they send a sample of it to them to get their opinion about it. This is very good strategy because if the new product has some shortages or defects, the sample test makers will warn the company at early. In the software world, this process is called "beta testing".

Obviously, by giving away free samples such companies follow another aim which is marketing their new products. In fact, this is a pre-market stage but it plays a key role in the success of world wide commercialization of the product. Such marketing solution has many advantages in comparison to the other ways. At first it is completely free and significantly decreases the companies marketing expenses. Also it is effective because free samples test makers introduce the product directly and face to face to the probable consumers and spread the word about it to their family and friends. The third advantage is that the people who informed about the product trust it simply because they know the marketers.

The other aim of spreading free samples by especially new emerging companies is "branding". During this stage of marketing they have not beneficial objects. Mainly they want to introduce and brand their product in a competitive market. When the people recognize them, they will continue to take out more benefits and profits from their products. On the other hand, well established companies have another reason. They want to keep their brands alive. They want to say their consumers that they always "exist" and are "everlasting".

Today with presence of internet this strategy of companies to introduce and maintain their products has become more effective and popular. Internet has a dynamic nature, so it is very compatible with introducing continually coming out new products. People also are keen to get free samples. They simply do not want to pay for everything. They want to get products and "taste" them. What a pleasure when this "tasting" is provided for "free"!
