What to Look For In a Self Storage Company

By: Drew Mers

Over the years, there has been an exponential rise in the demand for self storage facilities, as everyone who runs out of space, perhaps due to an accumulation of goods through the years or to an increase in family members, resorts to renting a storage unit in warehouses owned by the self storage entrepreneurs, where they can store their precious items for a particular period of time.

These items may not necessarily be costly, but more importantly, bear invaluable memories that just cannot be thrown away, even if the item itself has already lost its scrap value. Thus, you exert effort to ensure that the security of these items can be provided by the self storage company that you will choose.

So what, in particular, should you look for in a self storage company? First and foremost is the general security in the facility, because in the first place, you are renting the place for safekeeping of valuable goods. There has to be a 24/7 security system in the facility, in the form of security cameras, burglar alarm systems, security guards and an electronic access to the storage facility gates. Even a high perimeter fence can contribute a lot to security.

You have to make sure as well that these items are kept from theft, pest and, if possible, natural calamities. If, for example, your area is flood-prone, you might want to choose a storage facility that is in an elevated level, to reduce the chances of your items getting damaged.

If your items are sensitive to damage by extremes of temperature, you might also want to choose a facility that features climate-controlled storage units. Never sign up with a self storage company without even bothering to physically inspect the unit in person, because there can be alarming differences with what you see in videos, pictures and advertisements with the actual one. There is always a previous owner of that storage unit, so make certain that there are no remnants, before you decide to move your belongings in it.

Next, look for a self storage facility that is located in an area which is convenient enough for you to access, either from work or from home, depending on your purposes for renting the unit. You definitely should not choose a storage company that is far from your area, even if it offers lower rates, because access to it still entails an additional cost for transportation.

Other factors to look for in choosing the self storage company are the fees to be paid, the timing of access to your items, the availability of mobile storage or free transportation for your goods, any insurance in cases of damage, etc.
