Walking With Ankle Weights the Way Forward

By: Adam Jonathan Raymond Westrop

Walking in order to lose fat from your waist, legs or rear is very common in the current day and age. Well in fact it is very common you may be surprised to hear that millions of people take in this exercise. As long as the weather is suitable, thousands of people walk every single hour.

For added weight and resistance, many people then turn to ankle weights, however is this totally necessary for the majority of people?

Walking by itself is a great exercise, you do not have to use weights to provide extra resistance and indeed many people do not. However if you feel that walking is becoming boring, or if you feel you can take it to the next level then by all means you can start to carry weights. You can either use hand, wrist or ankle weights as long as you use them properly.

Walking with ankle weights is great resistance training which obviously makes every single step harder. One word of warning is to ensure that the weight is firmly attached to your ankles as otherwise it can become very uncomfortable on your skin and leave you with nasty marks and even bruises. Also beware not to overtrain with ankle weights. Do not use ankle weights all the time. Sometimes give your ankles a rest, it is good to let them breathe as well as give your joints and ligaments a break.

Walking with hand weights is also a very good idea and as well as providing extra weight to your body which makes walking harder, using hand weights is a great way to work your upper body too. If you do decide to use hand weights make sure you put a lot of effort into swinging your arms and also try incorporating some common hand and arm exercises. Movements such as boxing actions will be very useful in these circumstances.

Overall, I do recommend taking the next step and experimenting with ankle and hand weights. Just ensure you are careful and do not over do it.

Hopefully in reading this article you have learnt that ankle and hand weights can be a handy addition to a walking routine. Also consider the flexibility and the convenience of such weighted devices too, for example if it is raining outside and you do not fancy like going for your normal 30 minute walk around the block then why not strap on a pair of ankle weights whilst you do the housework? Doing house work for 30 minutes a day burns a surprising amount of calories already, if however you add some resistance to these activities then obviously this makes it harder and results in more calories burned. Never doubt the flexibility of these wonderful items, they are very easy to conceal and you can even wear them when you go grocery shopping or just simply strap them on whilst you are doing the gardening etc. At such a minor price these little inventions can be an invaluable item to you.
