Virtual Assistants Are Green All Over

By: Suzanne Aimee

The term Green Solutions has become a buzz word in the corporate world as well as among many government entities. A recent article featured in Government Technology, Stimulus Bill Includes Green Initiatives, states how President Obama would like to make the country more energy efficient. Furthermore, in the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 nearly $42 billion in funds is ear-marked for energy related investments. According to the Department of Energy, Office of Energy and Renewable Energy (EERE), the funds will be provided to states, local governments and tribal governments to support the development of energy efficiency and conservation strategies and programs.

So how does a virtual assistant make an impact? The title of this article was meant as a thought provoker for those who may have not considered having a virtual assistant as a green solution. Although the virtual assistant profession has not formally been recognized as a standard, in recent years it has become a very viable option for companies either looking to save on overhead costs and now the green aspect is just one more benefit to consider.

What are the green benefits of virtual assistance? Below are just a few of the benefits as it pertains to this article:

No Commuting. Most virtual assistants work from home therefore eliminating gas emissions normally produced in a daily commute to and from an office building.

No Office Space Required. Eliminating the need for electricity to power lighting, computer equipment and other power requirements found in typical office environment.

Paperless Environment. Virtual assistants work remotely via email, virtual private networks (VPN), web conferencing, faxes and phone. Electronic versions of documents are provided to clients and in some cases saved in online libraries or storage areas.

Work In Your Pajamas. Now this may sound silly but if you think about all the items used in your daily preparation for work; water for the shower, hair products and even clothing all consume some type of natural resource or contribute to landfill problems.

Companies who take a comprehensive look at including environmental concerns and the corresponding solutions into their business plans often obtain a competitive advantage. A virtual solution is not only a competitive advantage but an innovative way to create cost efficiency and is one step you as an individual or company can take to minimize the impact you have on the environmental issues we face today.
