The Triathlon Wetsuit Described

By: Chris Kennelly

The triathlon wetsuit can be considered as a separate or different item in comparison to the standard sort of wetsuits that most people know in terms of surfing and scuba diving suits. This is due to the fact that the triathlon wetsuit needs to be more breathable and more likely is more flexible than that of the aforementioned suits.

The main factors that may affect the selection of a suitable triathlon wetsuit are the ease of putting the wetsuit on and taking it off as well as issues pertaining to the comfort within the water, which the wearer requires during the swimming leg of the triathlon. Research has revealed that the wetsuit wearer in a swimming leg of the triathlon experiences less drag, and increased flow, in and through the water. However some people find that the wearing of a suit may hinder their flexibility whilst swimming, and feel somewhat restricted.

The manufacturers of these suits have employed the latest technology and have applied the best materials in the making of these suits. Many of the triathlon wetsuits are in fact not really wetsuits at all and can be considered more of a body suit, which accomplishes the functions mentioned above. The materials used include lycra which allow for the suit to hug the body and therefore provide that streamlined effect required in the water. These types of material also allow for quick drying once the athlete is out of the water. This effect allows the athlete to keep the suit on and gain added protection from sunburn, without being weighed down by the additional water kept in the suit. This in turn allows the athlete to save time when exiting the water, as it has been shown that many athletes add unnecessary minutes to their competing time, by stopping to take off the wetsuit after the swimming leg.

Manufacturers have also strived to provide a material that is ultra light, hence the athlete really feels as if they are not wearing any extra clothing when they leave the suit on after the swimming leg. This adds value to the athlete in the next leg of their triathlon, as they will need their strength and energy for the next leg of their race without having to worry about being weighed down by their gear.

The important issue in selecting a triathlon suit is the correct fitting and the suitability of the suit in the area that you will be participating in any triathlons, more importantly is the fact that prior to using a triathlon wetsuit in any of the races, ensure that you will not be disqualified for wearing one due to the specific rules that are relevant to some triathlons.
