Storing Your Winter Clothing in Self Storage

By: Drew Mers

Sorting out clothes inside overstuffed closets may prove to be a daunting task to most of us. And when you do this seasonally, you can not help but feel a little exasperated, knowing that you would do the same thing time and again.

With the little space you have, you try to squeeze in both seasons clothes at the same place. Clothes that you need for the moment may be obscured by unnecessary items, giving you a difficult time. However, one perfect solution comes along to save you from your seasonal troubles: the concept of self storage.

Self storage is simply renting a piece of unit space of specific sizes at a self storage facility run by companies. With the right unit size, high-tech security systems, and easy accessibility, self storage provides the customer the storage style he definitely needs.

During summer, winter clothing such as pullovers, furs, thick coats, gloves and boots, as well as vacation equipment such as snowmobiles and ski paraphernalia may be stored at a facility near you.

When winter comes, things you need for summer may now be transferred at the self storage facility. Seasonal storage is made possible because of the flexible length of lease provided by most companies. This method offers organizational neatness, convenience, and gives you and your closets some breathing room.

Packing your winter clothing requires some preparation, as randomly folding and stacking your clothes might do some irreversible damage. Special fabric, such as leather and fur, need special attention. You might also want to inquire the facility you chose if they have the climate control services, which may be needed by some of your items.

Storing special fabrics in inappropriate temperature and humidity settings may lessen their quality. Furs are best stored in a cold storage facility. Other advantages of a cold temperature setting inside your chosen unit include prevention of mold growth, emergence of pests, and fading of fabric.

Garments that must be hung, such as suits and dresses, are best placed at a wardrobe box with a built-in hanging rod. Other facilities offer the boxes for purchase. When stacking folded garments, it is wise to place the heaviest at the bottom so as not to crush other items. It is also recommended that you have a list of all your packed items before storage for security purposes.

Not only winter clothing and equipment may be put in a self storage facility, but also home appliances, furniture, documents, and other space-occupying materials found in the home or office.
