Pyrex® Beakers Are Essential For Any Laboratory

By: Crystal.Campbell

One of the most primary pieces of equipment found in any laboratory is the beaker. A beaker is a simple container for stirring, mixing and heating liquids and is fundamental for almost any life science experimental process. Beakers are generally cylindrical in shape, with a flat bottom and a lip for pouring out its contents. The presence of the lip means that the beaker cannot have a lid. However, they may be covered by a watch glass when in use to avoid contamination or loss of contents. Beakers can often be mistaken with a flask, but distinguishes itself by having sides that are straight, rather than sloping.

Beakers are available in all different sizes, ranging from one milliliter to several liters. The standard sized beakers are typically 1.4 times the diameter in height. The standard low form with a spout is called the Griffin form. Tall form beakers typically have the height twice its diameter and are referred to as Berzelius beakers. Beakers are commonly made with borosilicate glass, but can also be made with metal and polythene and polypropylene plastics. The glass beakers are specially made to withstand the heating and cooling of liquids and chemicals for any lab experiment.

Beakers are often graduated, which means the sides of the beaker is marked with lines indicating volume levels. For example, a 200 mL beaker would be market with lines indicating the 50, 100, 150, and 200 mL levels of volume. This serves the purpose of making approximate measurements of liquid volume and experimental accuracy.

Corning Incorporated is a global leader in the production of high quality Pyrex® glassware laboratory supplies and tools for life science research since 1915. Pyrex® beakers help improve productivity and enable breakthrough discoveries that lead to innovative solutions. They offer a wide range of sizes and styles of beakers that will fit the specific needs of any laboratory research setting. Pyrex® also has a low alkali content that gives it high corrosion resistance.
