Preventing The Agony Of Nipple Rash

By: Chris Kennelly

Due to the type of material that a wetsuit is made out of, normally a combination of nylon and neoprene, the wetsuit rubs against the skin and results in some form of rash, predominantly on and around the nipple area. The resulting irritation and agony of this type of rash is amplified by the salt water in the sea, and to be blatant, it burns like crazy.

The lycra rash guard actually becomes part of the surfers clothing regime, as with his or her board shorts, flip flops and wetsuit. It is a vital part of their clothing so that they do not have to endure getting the dreaded rash on their nipples.

The rash is not limited to the nipple area and can result in other areas too, specifically where the skin is a little more sensitive and the wetsuit continually rubs against this area. That is why it is obviously not recommended to walk far distances in a wetsuit, whether it is wet or dry. This is once again because of the rougher material rubbing against the skin.

When you us a lycra rash guard you are effectively creating a protective layer between the rough material and your skin, so the smoother lycra rash guard material actually absorbs that friction and prevents the rash from occurring. One of the main benefits of the lycra rash guard is that it is lightweight material, being lycra obviously, and does not affect the fitting of the wetsuit. In other words if you are wearing the lycra rash guard under the suit you do not feel like you actually have anything on under the suit.

The lycra rash guard is also quick drying, so after taking off the wetsuit you can leave the rash guard on, which dries quickly and can help protect from sunburn. It is however a good idea to rinse off under the shower, especially the saltwater, because as the salt dries and crystallizes it becomes extremely uncomfortable, and creates a scratching sensation under the clothing. It is also a good idea to rinse your wetsuit off as this will help ensure the longevity of the suit too.

Many people also buy the lycra rash guard for reasons other than prevent rashes caused by the wetsuit, body boarders may use them due to the body board causing a rash for similar reasons and others purchase these guards purely as an item to wear for protection from the sun, and based on the fact that they do not retain a lot of heat in hot weather, meaning the material is breathable and cooling.

The lycra rash guard is a necessary item if you are going to be using a wetsuit a lot, and specifically if you will be moving around a lot in the wetsuit, such as one does in the sport of surfing.
