Ins and Outs of Business Mailing Lists

By: Art Gib

Although seemingly popular for numerous years, then unpopular for a while, the business mailing list has resurfaced in popularity. What is a business mailing list you may ask? Well, it is a list of business names and addresses, usually broken down to those businesses within certain industries, so that other businesses may send mailings to them for advertising purposes.

These advertisements vary in all purposes from car dealerships sponsoring great deals for a weekend sale, to a new dentist being announced in a dental office in a small city.

The business mailing list is comprised of businesses within a certain demographic who may be interested in the offers being advertised. The objective is for the business mailing list to be so targeted that the businesses that are included on the list are very "hot" for the information or, in other words, are ready to be advertised to for this particular product or service. This makes conversion from advertisement to sale much easier and a more likely scenario, thus making the advertisement campaign a success.

Building a business mailing list can be somewhat of a tedious task if it is done correctly. The quick and easy way to generate a business list is to just gather a list of businesses in a physical area that fit the business type requested. A better list has been "mined" meaning that it has been worked through a little more thoroughly and prepared for advertisements to be sent to.

The list will be more refined with the businesses being more closely related, a little more research done on their readiness to purchase the product or service to be advertised, and their interests in receiving advertisements researched and confirmed.

Using a business mailing list can be very advantageous if it is used appropriately and has been thoroughly mined. With the right advertising message to a well-mined business mailing list, sales can be increased by double digit numbers for the advertising company. Sometimes these new relationships will take a while to convert into sales, although quite often the conversions will occur right away making the advertising campaign an immediate success.

Success with a business mailing list, as with all advertising campaign mediums, can be measured differently depending on the desired outcome. Some companies will consider it a success if their incoming calls and requests for information are increased, others would be happy to have their immediate sales increased; each company needs to understand their desires before using a business mailing list so their success will be easily determined.
