Information Products Produce Income

By:

As a freelance business and health writer I am paid per assignment. The amount is usually arrived at by figuring out how long the project should take, the level of difficulty, and allotted budget. It is another way of saying that I am paid so much per hour. Psychologists, hairdressers, and golf instructors all get paid by the hour. Even physicians are paid by the hour, the amount often determined by an insurance company.

The problem is trading dollars for hours is one way to get burnt out if you are thinking that the harder you work the more you will get paid. I was taking that direction until recently when I rewrote my business plan and decided to put together several information products.

This is what I have learned from my experience.

To build your list of people who are interested in what you do and may eventually become your clients and customers, you need to put together a small information product and give it away for free. The idea is to build your list. Your product may be a recording of a radio program from Blog Talk Radio or a series of teleseminars or a one page tip sheet to that shows how to complete a task or solve a problem.

Creating products helps establish you as the expert in your field. If you have been in business for some time, you already know enough to create several information products about your profession or business. You also know enough to create information products about particular niches in your profession or business. And if you are thinking about creating a product about your hobby (raising Doberman dogs) or special interest (Civil War history) , you know there are lots of people who want to know about that topic and will purchase your product.

Your product may be an e-book, an audio program with workbooks, a video or a combination of all three. Above all you want your information product to reflect who you are. To do that well you need to first understand why you want to do it. The foundation of any business, and especially for information products, is the motivation and excitement that you bring. Keep in mind that any one information product is not going to give you an immediate large income, but it will give you many of the attributes that you need to build your business or profession and that includes knowing how to create information products.

Credibility is another major characteristic that an information product gives you. You become the expert in the field. You are the celebrity, the go-to person who people want to meet at a networking event. Even if they may not use your information product, they are sure to know someone who is interested in your information, particularly from a guru such as yourself.

If writing information products is something that interests you, start taking notes about topics that interest you and that you talk about with other people. Many people find it easier to talk about a topic than writing about it. Based on your conversations with others, first put together an outline of that topic with major roman numerals as the major sub heads. Then fill in the details under each subhead. Repeat the last step for more details and you are on your way to writing your first information product.
