There are several laws that are put in place to protect the rights of the employee in the workplace. They give employment advice to workers and when there are not followed the companies can get disciplinary action. Some of these include:

People with disabilities act: Any person who possesses the required skills for a job should not be denied the opportunity because you have a disability. This act also states that a potential employee who is related to a disabled person should not be discriminated against when looking for a job. Disability in this case can be physical or mental.

Age discrimination in employment act: Your age should never be a reason for you to be denied a job opportunity at any working place. This act applies to those people who are in the stated age bracket by years by employment law. When you have a grievance concerning the same, you can always refer to the act depending on the state you are in and the time since laws keep changing from time to time.

Consolidated omnibus budget reconciliation act: This allows you to participate in the decision about the healthcare plan in the company. In this case you have the opportunity to have your spouse or children continue to get medical insurance even after you die, lose your job or work less hours.

Employee retirement income security act: This ensures that there are retirement packages in the company that you are in and that they are reasonable and will assist you adequately in terms of financial resources. The benefits should not just be promised to you, the company has to follow through with them.

Fair labor standards act: The act sets the minimum wage, the money you get for extra work done, the records that companies have about you and laws that restrict child labor.

Occupational safety and health act: As an employer this law requires you to minimize the health risks that the employers are exposed to in the workplace. The act also ensures that you have programs that teach the employees about safety measures they should follow in the workplace.

Family and medical leave act: This act gives those employees who are covered leave from work for not more than twelve months. During this time, you are still paid and assured that you will still have a job when you get back. This is to give the employee some time off to rest or may be as a result of illness of a family member or even yourself as a worker.
