Enjoying Japanese Cars: From The Pre-owned Toyota Corolla To The Used Lexus

By: Anna Stenning

The thrill of buying a Japanese car has not abated despite the global downturn. The workmanship of many, if not all, Japanese cars is so high that these brands have developed a name for themselves around the globe. But in recent times, used Lexus cars, second hand Mazdas and pre-owned Toyotas have all become even more popular as they are cheaper.

From London to Capetown and from Beijing to Los Angeles, the Japanese motor remains a popular purchase. The common argument against a second hand Nissan or a used Lexus LS460, at least in Britain, is that when something goes wrong with them, the spare parts are expensive to get - and can also be problematic to source, depending on which brand you choose.

An American brand such as Ford, or a European brand such as Peugeot, is often popular because the feeling among car buyers is that spare parts can be more easily found and are indeed cheaper than their Japanese counterparts. Getting spare parts for a used Lexus, for example, could prove problematic.

However, against this argument, is the idea that Japanese cars such as second hand Toyota Corollas have a very high build quality and are therefore significantly less likely to break down. A used Lexus is meant to have longer lasting parts than, for example, a used Ford Cougar.

Some people might say that it all balances out in the end, that is - cheaper maintenance of US and European cars, but fewer breakdowns with the Japanese brands. One Japanese brand that might be considered a safe middle ground is the Nissan - which has the build quality of Japanese-based factories (though built in the UK) but spare parts can be found relatively cheaply.

Japanese cars will continue to be popular, whether regards a Mazda MX-5, or a second hand Toyota - or an exciting used Lexus, build quality is what people often respect. A reputation for design aesthetic is also a very big plus with Japanese cars, as they look good even when compared to the latest French-designed auto.

So even when people are buying the brand new Japanese motors, they seem to be switching to second hand varieties, which offer a cheaper initial outlay and indeed are very reliable motors despite being pre-owned. As long as the previous owner has looked after the car, it is likely to provide several years of reliable use. The used Lexus LF-A, second hand Toyota Century, pre-owned Nissan Micra - all represent a high value purchase.
