This is a summary that is going to cover drilling equipment/drilling rigs. The are many part to a drilling rig. I want to cover in this summary is the top section of a drilling rig . There are far to many sections of a oil rig to cover, so I am just going to give a summary of the top of a drilling rig.drilling equipment I am going to explain a few article's covering the Rig from top to bottom. The top being the crown block to the bottom being the drill bit.
The crown block is a piece of equipment that is located a the top of the rig. This is usually were a American flag is placed. The crown block is a piece of equipment that uses pulley to support the weight of all the pipe that is going down the drill hole. A pulley system is used to divert the massive amount of mass that the crown block has to support. The traveling block or pulley systemwill be connected with a large diameter wire to a traveling block. This is all held up by a big metal mast. The mast is what looks like a antenna tower.
A traveling block is all most like a crown block. The purpose of the traveling block is to use pulleys to support a large amount of equipment mass that will be lowered down the bore hole. To give you an example of the price of a crown block, they range from about $14,000 USD to all most $80,000 USD. The weight that a traveling block can hold will range from about 400,000 thousand pounds up to 900,000 pounds.This should give you and idea about the massive amount of equipment weight that is lowered down a drilling rigs bore. Of course this is for the land drilling rigs.
The traveling block in then conjoined to a top dive. There are 2 different types a rigs a a rotary table/kelly and a Top Drive. The Top drive drilling rig is one that uses a power swivel or top drive in order to do the drilling. A rotary table or Kelly does the same thing but is located on the rigs main plat form. The Top drive will be used by the traveling block. The top drive land rig is more costly but is considered to be a more effective land rig , taking less people to operate.
