Cheap Web Hosting - Quality Hosting?

By: Carl Spender

Why is cheap web hosting so cheap? What sacrifice do you make to get a lower price Almost all cheap webhosting options are shared web hosting. This means, with certainty, that you are sacrificing a number of options in terms of speed, security and reliability.

Users who purchase cheap, shared hosting packages are lumped together on the same server. This means that if one of the other users does something with their hosting that interrupts the operation of your server like creating an incorrectly programmed CRON job that continuously pulls resources away from the server, your site(s) will be affected by it. This may mean that your websites could be offline for an unknown amount of time because of the negligence of just one user. Since there could be dozens of users sharing hosting on one server the odds are against you when it comes to possible crashes.

Shared web hosting also means shared bandwidth to the server. If one of the sharing users hosts a high traffic site, or a website that hosts lots of flash or video that takes a lot of bandwidth to load, your website will suffer the consequences. If you had the intention of hosting a site like that yourself, you may not want to do it on shared web hosting.

If one of the users that shares your server has security flaws within their site there is a good chance that any damage that may be done will be done to the server itself, not that user's sites or account alone. The resulting crashes and limited bandwidth will be suffered by your site(s) as well.

Cheap web hosting is an okay option if your plan is to host several small, text based content sites and slow loading or downtimes will not affect your plans. Just keep in mind that cheap web hosting is not always synonymous with affordable webhosting.
